| Obverse description | Draped bust of Julia Maesa facing right, her hair elaborately coiffed and bound, rendered in the provincial Alexandrian style characteristic of the early third century AD. The effigy is presented with finely articulated drapery folds about the shoulders. The Greek legend ΙΟΥΛ ΜΑΙϹΑ ϹΕΒ ΜΗΤ ϹΤΡΑ runs around the periphery, identifying her as Augusta and mother of the strategos. The coin shows heavy patination and surface encrustation consistent with extended burial, partially obscuring the finer details of the portrait. |
