This tetradrachm belongs to regnal year 22 of Antoninus Pius, a reign so deliberately uneventful that the emperor himself rarely left Italy — a studied contrast to his predecessor Hadrian's ceaseless touring. Alexandria's mint continued issuing in the debased billon that had been standard for Egyptian provincial coinage since the Neronian debasement of the first century, a closed currency system that prevented the coins from circulating outside Egypt and insulated the province from broader imperial monetary fluctuations.
