Year 17 of Antoninus Pius's reign — L ΙΖ in the Alexandrian regnal dating system — fell during one of the most administratively stable periods in Roman Egypt. The Alexandrian mint operated under the prefect of Egypt rather than direct imperial control, producing billon tetradrachms for purely local circulation; they were legally prohibited from leaving the province, a monetary quarantine Rome maintained over Egypt from Augustus onward.
