Year 14 of Severus Alexander's reign corresponds to 234–235 AD, just months before his assassination on the Rhine frontier in March 235 — killed by his own troops alongside his mother Julia Mamaea, reportedly at the instigation of the future emperor Maximinus Thrax. The Alexandrian mint operated on a regnal year system tied to the Egyptian calendar, making these tetradrachms precisely datable in a way most Roman provincial issues are not.
Billon content had been declining steadily through the Severan period, and by L ΙΔ the silver fraction was negligible.
