| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Pupienus facing right, depicted from the rear, the paludamentum and scale-armour rendered in fine detail. The surrounding Greek legend reads Α Κ Μ ΚΛΩ(Δ) ΠΟΥΠΙΗΝΟϹ ΕΥϹ(Ε), identifying the emperor with his full titulature. The flan is irregular and slightly rough, consistent with Alexandrian billon tetradrachm production of the mid-third century AD. The portrait conveys the imperial authority typical of the joint reign of Pupienus and Balbinus in 238 AD. |
