Reverse description Athena, helmeted and draped, seated left on a high-backed throne, extending her right hand to present a small figure of Nike and holding a long spear upright in her left hand; a large round shield rests against the base of the throne at lower right. The regnal date L Α (Year 1) appears in the left field, denoting the first regnal year of Gordian III's reign at Alexandria. The composition is rendered in bold provincial relief characteristic of Alexandrian tetradrachm coinage.
