| 正面描述 | Laureate and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted from the front, with a gorgoneion (apotropaic Medusa head) on the breastplate. The legend encircles the bust in Greek characters identifying the emperor with his titles. The portrait exhibits the characteristic Romano-Egyptian provincial style of the mid-3rd century AD. |

Year 5 of Gordian III's reign, rendered on Alexandrian tetradrachms as L Ε, places this issue in 241–242 AD — the same year the young emperor, then barely seventeen, departed Rome to lead a campaign against Shapur I of Persia. He never returned. The Alexandria mint continued producing regnal-year issues with mechanical regularity throughout his eastern campaign, making pieces dated L Ε among the last struck before news of his death at Misiche reached Egypt in early 244.
