This tetradrachm belongs to Gordian III's fifth regnal year in Egypt — a province whose mint operated under a closed currency system, meaning Roman denarii and Alexandrian tetradrachms could not be exchanged at face value outside their respective zones. The Δ in the type designation marks the fourth officina of the Alexandria mint during this issue year. Gordian was thirteen when he became emperor and would be dead before turning twenty, assassinated — or possibly killed in battle — during the Persian campaign of 244 AD.
