Additional information

Year 13 of Antoninus Pius's reign was, by any measure, a quiet moment in Roman imperial history — no frontier crises, no succession anxieties, no monetary emergencies. The Alexandria mint produced billon tetradrachms at a pace that reflected the province's fiscal stability, though the silver content of Alexandrian billon had been quietly declining for decades before this issue and would continue to do so under successors. Egypt's coinage remained a closed currency system: coins struck at Alexandria could not legally circulate outside the province, and foreign coin entering Egypt was exchanged at the border.
