| 表面の説明 | Laureate bust of Emperor Claudius facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic-Roman tradition characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage. The portrait displays the emperor's characteristic features with a radiate laurel wreath crown. The surrounding Greek legend reads ΤΙ ΚΛΑΥΔΙ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒΑ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙ ΑΥΤΟΚ(Ρ), with the regnal year L Ε (year 5) positioned in the lower field. The style reflects the local Alexandrian mint's interpretation of the imperial portrait type. |

Messalina's appearance on Alexandrian coinage is striking for reasons beyond the numismatic. By year five of Claudius's reign — when this tetradrachm was struck — she was already exercising influence well beyond any conventional imperial consort role, and ancient sources, however hostile, agree she was operating with near-autonomous authority in Rome. Her name rendered in Greek on provincial Egyptian coinage reflects the deliberate projection of dynastic legitimacy the Julio-Claudians required from Alexandria's mint, Rome's most productive source of eastern silver currency.
RPC I 5124 is not a common type. Milne's sequencing places this among the earliest regnal year issues with her titulature in this form.
