Additional information

Aurelian's Egyptian coinage of 272 AD falls squarely within the tumultuous period of his campaign against Zenobia's Palmyrene Empire, which had controlled Egypt since 270. Alexandria was retaken by Aurelian in 272, and the resumption of imperial coinage there was essentially a political act — a reassertion of Roman authority over one of the empire's most economically critical provinces. The "L Γ" regnal year notation follows the Alexandrian convention of dating by the Egyptian calendar year of the emperor's reign, a practice unique to this mint.
