Year 5 of Aurelian's reign in Alexandria corresponds to a mint operating under unusual pressure. The emperor had only recently reunified the empire after defeating Zenobia's Palmyrene breakaway state in 272 and the Gallic Empire shortly before that — Alexandria itself had briefly fallen under Palmyrene control. Aurelian's Egyptian tetradrachms of this period reflect the debased billon standard that had been grinding down through the third century, the silver content by this point largely notional.
The ΕΤΟΥϹ Ε regnal year dating is the Alexandrian mint's characteristic feature, tying each issue precisely to the Roman-Egyptian calendar year beginning in late August.
