Diocletian's eighth regnal year (L Η) corresponds to a period of intense administrative restructuring — the Tetrarchy was formally established in 293 AD, dividing imperial authority between two Augusti and two Caesars. The Alexandria mint was among the most prolific producers of billon tetradrachms in the late Roman period, and issues from this precise transitional year straddle the old Principate-style Egyptian coinage tradition and the monetary reforms Diocletian would soon impose empire-wide. The Δ workshop mark indicates production from the fourth officina.
