Additional information

Alexandria's mint was operating under unusual political pressure during this precise regnal year. Aurelian had only just retaken Egypt from the breakaway Palmyrene kingdom in 272, ending roughly two years of Zenobia's effective control over the province — and with it, control of Rome's critical grain supply. These billon tetradrachms were among the first imperial issues struck at Alexandria after its reintegration, produced while Aurelian was simultaneously campaigning to reunify the fragmented empire's western half.

The L Δ regnal date — year four of Aurelian's reign by Alexandrian reckoning — places this piece in a narrow window before the mint's output shifted again following Aurelian's murder in 275.
