Petra's civic coinage under Caracalla reflects the city's absorption into the province of Arabia Nerva Traiana in 106 AD, after which local mints operated under Roman provincial authority while retaining Greek-language legends — a deliberate nod to the Hellenized commercial culture that had made Nabataean Petra wealthy long before Roman annexation. The lettering sequence in this issue's legend encodes the tribunician and consular dating conventions standard to provincial struck under the joint reign and then sole rule of Caracalla between 198 and 217.
