Vespasian's "PACI ORBIS TERRARVM AVG" coinage was a deliberate ideological statement following the chaos of 69 AD, the Year of the Four Emperors, when Galba, Otho, and Vitellius had each in turn claimed the purple before Vespasian's Danubian and eastern legions finally settled the matter.
