Reverse description Hercules, the divine patron of Postumus, depicted standing and facing right, leaning with his right arm upon a club that rests upon a rock, over which is draped the Nemean lion's skin. The figure is rendered in a robust, classicising style consistent with Gallic Empire coinage. The reverse legend VIRTVS EQVITVM encircles the type, with the mintmark S visible in the exergue or field, denoting the Mediolanum mint. The scene alludes to martial virtue and the emperor's claim to Herculean strength and legitimacy. Patination and surface encrustation consistent with an excavated or long-circulated specimen are visible.
