Obverse description Radiate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Maximianus facing right, rendered in the martial style characteristic of the Tetrarchic period. The radiate crown, combining solar rays with a military helmet, identifies the denomination as an antoninianus. The emperor's cuirass is finely detailed with scale or muscle patterning, conveying imperial authority and military prowess. The circumferential Latin legend IMP MAXIMIANVS AVG runs clockwise around the portrait within a beaded border.

Additional information

Maximianus struck heavily throughout the first tetrarchy period, and the Siscia mint — almost certainly the source for RIC V.2 422 — was running at exceptional volume during 290–294 to fund campaigns against Carausius in Britain and pressure on the Rhine frontier. Salus types were not idle piety; they appeared in clusters during periods of military strain, functioning as public reassurance during years when the western Augustus could not be everywhere at once.
