The PAXX AVGG reverse type — an apparent scribal or die-cutter's error for PAX AVGG — appears on issues from the Diocletianic reform period, when the mint system was being reorganized across multiple officinae simultaneously. The doubled X is not a modern cataloging variant; it appears on the die itself, and RIC V.2 399 records it as struck. Whether it reflects haste, a poorly trained engraver, or a brief uncorrected error before the die was pulled, no one has settled.
