Maximianus issued this type as co-emperor under the Tetrarchic system Diocletian was assembling in the late third century, and the IOVI AVGG legend — invoking Jupiter on behalf of both Augusti — was a deliberate theological statement about divine legitimacy. Diocletian took Jovius as his divine epithet, associating himself directly with Jupiter, while Maximianus was assigned Herculius, making his appearance on a Jovian coinage a carefully calibrated gesture of dynastic unity rather than personal claim.
The RIC V.2 384 attribution places this among the Diocletianic mint output at a moment when the antoninianus itself was nearing administrative obsolescence — the currency reform of 294 would effectively retire the denomination.
