Obverse description Radiate, draped bust of Diocletian facing right, wearing the characteristic spiked radiate crown of the antoninianus denomination, with paludamentum (military cloak) fastened at the right shoulder. The emperor is depicted with short hair and a close-cropped beard, rendered in the vigorous, somewhat austere style typical of the Tetrarchic period. The portrait shows strong, idealized features with well-defined musculature visible at the shoulder. A dot may appear beneath the bust on certain die varieties. The obverse legend encircles the bust, reading from the lower left.
