Reverse description The personification of Annona, draped and standing to the left, holds a cluster of grain ears in her extended right hand, symbolising agricultural abundance, and a cornucopiae overflowing with produce in her left hand, emblematic of plenty. At her feet rests a modius, the standard Roman grain measure, reinforcing the allegory of the imperial grain supply. The composition is typical of the late third-century imperial iconographic programme celebrating provisioning and economic stability. The exergue carries the officina and mint mark XXIΔ, and the reverse legend encircles the central figure within a beaded border.

Additional information

Diocletian's early antoniniani predate his sweeping monetary reforms of 294, when the introduction of the argenteus effectively retired the denomination. This piece belongs to the transitional phase when Diocletian was still working within the debased billon framework he inherited — silver content was negligible in practice despite what composition cataloging implies. The ANNONA type, invoking the grain supply, was a pointed choice for a regime anxious to project stability after the chaos of the third-century crisis.
