Additional information

Zofingen's civic coinage rights in this period derived from imperial grants that the city jealously guarded against encroachment by the Habsburg administration. The Angster — a fractional denomination struck for petty local exchange — circulated almost exclusively within the town and its immediate market catchment, which is precisely why survivors are so rarely found in decent condition: these were pocket change, handled constantly and discarded without ceremony.
