The Angster was the smallest denomination in circulation across much of the Swiss Confederation during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and Lucerne's issues were no exception to the chronic shortage of small change that plagued urban economies throughout the period. The informal designation 'Bäggeli' — a diminutive term rooted in local dialect — suggests these coins circulated primarily among the working population for whom they represented real daily purchasing power.
