Reverse description The reverse depicts the Archangel Michael standing in full figure, shown in three-quarter view, his wings prominently spread, treading upon and slaying a dragon or demon beneath his feet. The archangel is dressed in armour and raises a sword or lance in his right hand while holding a shield in his left, in the tradition of the Anglo-Gallic angel gold coinage type. A nimbus surrounds his head. The encircling legend, in uncial script, reads SANCTVS MICHAEL ARCHANGEL. A beaded border frames the design, which displays the bold, somewhat crude workmanship typical of hammered provincial Netherlandish gold coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
