Amyntas was installed as king of Galatia by Mark Antony around 36 BC, then shrewdly switched allegiance to Octavian before Actium — a calculation that paid off. Augustus confirmed his rule and expanded his territory substantially, making him one of the more powerful client kings in Asia Minor during the early Principate. His reign ended abruptly in 25 BC when he was killed during a campaign against the Homonadenses in Rough Cilicia, an ambush reportedly orchestrated by the widow of a chieftain he had executed. Augustus used the vacancy to convert the territory directly into the province of Galatia.
