Beschrijving voorzijde Central field bears the Islamic shahada inscription in Arabic script, arranged in two lines within a plain or beaded border. The legends read 'La ilaha illa Allah / Muhammad rasul Allah' (There is no god but God / Muhammad is the messenger of God). The script is rendered in a somewhat crude, informal hand consistent with early Ottoman hammered coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly ragged at the edges, typical of hand-struck silver of this period. No figurative imagery is present, in accordance with Islamic artistic convention.

Aanvullende informatie

Osman I never lived to see the monetary system his successors would build, but this akçe — issued in his name across a reign spanning the sultanate's founding decades — is the point of origin for Ottoman silver coinage. The type continued to be struck well after his death in 1324, making precise attribution to his actual lifetime nearly impossible without die study.
