Mehmed II Giray ruled the Crimean Khanate only briefly before being killed by Nogai rivals in 1577 — the same year this akce was struck. His reign was marked by violent factional conflict among the Giray dynasty and deepening tension with the Ottomans, who held ultimate authority over who sat on the Crimean throne. Coins from reigns this short rarely survive in any quantity, not through careful preservation but through simple arithmetic: there was almost no time to mint them.
