Arnold of Oreye acquired the lordship of Rummen through his marriage to Jeanne de Rummen around the mid-fourteenth century, and his gold coinage was struck in direct imitation of the French royal mouton d'or — a deliberate strategy employed by minor Low Countries lords to leverage the credibility and circulation of a well-trusted coin type across regional markets. The Valois mouton d'or had itself been revived by Philip VI in 1355, making Arnold's adoption of the type almost immediate.
Rummen was a small lordship in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. That such a minor domain produced gold at all reflects how fragmented monetary authority remained in the medieval Low Countries.
