Aes formatum refers to the category of pre-monetary bronze pieces used in central Italy before Rome developed a true struck coinage — cast in rough functional shapes, weighed rather than counted, and exchanged by the pound. The horseshoe form is among the more distinctive shapes documented, though the precise region of manufacture remains debated. These objects predate the aes grave series and circulated alongside other cast bronze forms in a system where the as librale, nominally a Roman pound of bronze, served as the unit of account.
