| 裏面の説明 | Completely anepigraphic; the reverse field is entirely blank, bearing no inscriptions, devices, or decorative motifs. The surface displays a coarser, more irregular texture than the obverse, with pronounced porosity and pitting characteristic of sand-cast or open-mould bronze production. Patches of malachite-green and earthy brown patina cover the field uniformly, attesting to its considerable antiquity as a pre-monetary bronze cake of the pre-Roman or early Republican Italian tradition. |

Before Rome developed a true coinage system, raw bronze was exchanged by weight — weighed out on scales at each transaction, not counted. Aes formatum refers to cast bronze in irregular or semi-regular cake shapes, a step above raw aes rude but still pre-monetary in the modern sense. These pieces circulated alongside livestock and land as stores of value rather than as coins proper.
The transition away from this system accelerated after the First Punic War, when Rome's expanding Mediterranean commitments demanded faster, more standardized exchange mechanisms.
