| Beschrijving keerzijde | The mythological scene of the punishment of Dirce, known as the Farnese Bull composition, depicts Amphion standing to the right and Zethus standing to the left, the twin brothers sharing a common cloak draped across their shoulders. Amphion grasps Dirce by the hair with one hand and holds a rope with the other, preparing to bind her to the bull, while Zethus steadies the bull with both hands. The scene is rendered in the ambitious, multi-figure style characteristic of large-format provincial bronzes from Asia Minor under the Severan dynasty. The reverse legend in Greek identifies the issuing city and the eponymous magistrate responsible for the emission. |
