| Reverse description | Mythological scene depicting the sleeping Ariadne reclining left within the grotto of Naxos, her right hand raised to her head in the canonical pose of abandonment and slumber. To the left, a Maenad stands facing right, holding a thyrsus and raising her left hand in a gesturing motion. At centre, a Satyr lifts the drapery of Ariadne with his left hand while raising his right hand, observing the sleeping figure. The scene is rendered in the elaborate narrative style characteristic of large-module Pergamene civic bronzes. The surrounding legend identifies the issuing city and the eponymous strategos responsible for the emission. |
