Hadrianeia, a small Mysian city named in honor of Hadrian following his tour of the eastern provinces, produced civic bronze on a substantial scale under Philip I — the Arab-born emperor who seized power after arranging, or at least failing to prevent, the murder of Gordian III on campaign in Mesopotamia. The magistrate named in this coin's legend, Ulpius Maximus, held the archonship during Philip's reign and is attested across several Hadrianeian issues, suggesting a sustained tenure rather than a single-year appointment.
