| Descripción del reverso | Cybele, the Phrygian mother goddess, stands facing with head turned to the left, rendered in full figure in long robes, flanked symmetrically by two lions, one on each side. The goddess is depicted in a hieratic, frontal pose characteristic of Anatolian provincial coinage, her attributes and stance evoking her role as protector of the city. The reverse legend, referencing the local strategos Claudius Pellas, runs around the periphery of the field. The composition reflects the deep religious and civic significance of the Cybele cult at Clazomenae, a major Ionian city of the conventus of Smyrna. The overall style is typical of large-module Severan-era provincial bronzes from Asia Minor. |

Clazomenae, one of the twelve cities of the Ionian League, had long since ceded its classical importance by the Severan period, but retained enough civic pride — and enough wealth — to commission bronze medallions of this scale. Issues of 43mm and above from Asia Minor provincial mints were not routine coinage; they functioned closer to presentation pieces, likely distributed at civic festivals or to mark imperial honors received by the city. The magistrate name encoded in the obverse legend allows these to be sequenced within Severus's reign, though the precise year of this issue remains debated among specialists.
