| Reverse description | Nike, winged and advancing to the right, faces a youthful figure of Commodus standing to the left in military dress and holding a spear; together, the two figures extend a laurel wreath between them at the center of the composition, a motif emblematic of imperial victory and divine sanction. The scene is dynamically composed in the tradition of large Asiatic provincial bronzes, with Nike occupying the left field and the emperor the right. The reverse legend, distributed around the periphery of the field in Greek script, names the local magistrates responsible for the issue and identifies the civic authority of Mytilene. |
