The text, set across several lines within the wreath's border, proclaims the titles and precedence of the city of Pergamum as first of Asia, first metropolis, and first thrice-neocorate of the Augusti, issued under the authority of the strategos Iulius Anthimos. The reverse is purely epigraphic in character, a distinctive type employed by Pergamum to assert its supreme civic rank among the cities of the province of Asia. |
