| Beschrijving keerzijde | Hades, bearded and draped, drives a galloping quadriga to the right, clasping the struggling figure of Persephone whom he carries off in his arms. Beneath the hooves of the four horses, an overturned vase pours water and a serpent is depicted moving to the right, iconographic elements alluding to the chthonic underworld realm. The composition is dynamic and monumental, characteristic of the large-module provincial bronzes struck at Sardis under Septimius Severus. The encircling reverse legend records the issuing civic magistrate and the city's neocorate honours. This mythological scene relates to the local cult of Kore-Persephone venerated in the Sardis region. |
