| Reverse description | Two standing figures face one another in a homonoia composition: to the left, a bearded male figure representing Pergamum (Pergamos or the Demos) stands facing right, holding a statuette of Asclepius and a sceptre; to the right, a youthful male figure representing Ephesus (Androklos or the personified city) stands facing left, holding a statuette of Artemis and a sceptre. An altar appears between the two figures. The scene emblematically commemorates the homonoia (concord) between the cities of Pergamum and Ephesus, a common theme in the civic coinage of Asia Minor under the Antonine emperors. The reverse legend, distributed around the field, names the strategos Publius Aelius Pious and declares the concord of the Pergamenes and Ephesians. |
