To the right, Asclepius stands facing left, holding a long serpent-staff (kerykeion-style rod entwined with serpent). The composition depicts the serpent being fed by Artemis in the presence of Asclepius, a scene alluding to the close religious ties between Ephesus and Pergamum, the two cities named in the reverse legend. The design reflects the homonoia (concord) coinage tradition between these two major Asiatic cities. The surrounding legend identifies the issuing authority and the provincial strategos Pius. |
