| Beschrijving keerzijde | Asclepius, the god of medicine, is depicted seated in a biga drawn by two centaurs moving to the left. Asclepius holds in one hand a statue of Artemis of Ephesus, the famous cultic idol of the Ephesian goddess, and in the other hand his characteristic serpent-entwined staff (kerykeion). One of the centaurs carries a long transverse torch over his shoulder, a detail emphasizing the ceremonial and religious character of the scene. The reverse legend ΕΠΙ ϹΤΡΑ ΠΙΟΥ ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ records the issuing authority, referencing the strategos Pios and the joint Koinon of Pergamenians and Ephesians, reflecting the cooperative civic coinage arrangement between the two cities. |
