Pergamum had held neokorate status — the honor of maintaining an imperial cult temple — since the reign of Augustus, making it one of the earliest cities in Asia Minor to receive that distinction. By the Severan period it had accumulated a second neokorate, which this coin explicitly advertises. The magistrate named in the legend, Julius Pollion, is attested across several Pergamene issues of this reign, allowing approximate sequencing within the local bronze series.
The designation "Β ΝΕΟΚΟΡΩΝ" was a civic boast with real political weight, tied directly to provincial rivalry with Smyrna and Ephesus.
