| Beschrijving keerzijde | Two river gods are depicted seated in confronting poses: Maeandros on the left, seated facing right, holds a reed in his right hand and a cornucopia in his left, while resting on an overturned water urn from which water flows; opposite him, Marsyas sits facing left, holding a flute and a palm branch, likewise resting upon an overturned urn. The composition, a rare and elaborate double river-deity type, reflects Apamea's civic pride in its association with both the Maeander River and the mythological satyr Marsyas. The multi-part Greek legend surrounding the scene identifies the civic magistrate and the depicted figures. |
