Hadrian's philhellenism was not mere affectation. He was initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries, served as archon of Athens, and poured resources into Greek cities on a scale no emperor before him had matched. The inscription ΤΟΙϹ ΑΧΑΙΟΙϹ ΑΝΕΘΗΚΕ — "dedicated to the Achaeans" — places this issue directly within his program of Panhellenic revival, culminating in the foundation of the Panhellenion, a league of Greek cities convened at Athens around 131-132 AD with Corinth among its participants.
At 35+ grams, this is a substantial civic bronze, likely struck for ceremonial distribution rather than routine commerce.
