The Greek circular legend ΑΝΤΙΝΟΟϹ ΗΡΩϹ (Antinous Hero) runs around the periphery of the field, identifying the deified favourite of Emperor Hadrian in his heroised aspect. The portrait is bold and high-relief, displaying the accomplished die-cutting typical of the Smyrnaean civic coinage of this period. |

A caduceus, the winged staff of Hermes, appears in the field before the animal, serving as a symbolic attribute linking Antinous to Hermes-Mercury in his chthonic and psychopomp aspects. The dedicatory legend ΠΟΛΕΜΩΝ ΑΝΕΘΗΚΕ ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΟΙϹ (Polemon dedicated [this] to the Smyrnaeans) runs around the periphery, recording the civic benefaction of the sophist Polemon of Smyrna who is known to have promoted the cult of Antinous in the city. |
