Reverse description A female panther, associated with the Dionysiac thiasos, stands in left profile with her raised right forepaw resting upon a thyrsus, the Dionysian staff, which is positioned diagonally in the field. The animal is rendered with naturalistic attention to musculature and feline posture. The dedicatory inscription ΠΟΛΕΜΩΝ ΑΝΕΘΗΚΕ ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΟΙϹ encircles the design, recording the dedication by the sophist Polemon to the people of Smyrna. A ground line is visible beneath the figure, framing the composition.
