| Reverse description | Heracles standing to the right in dynamic pose, raising his club overhead and preparing to strike the savage Mares of Diomedes, which appear before him. The scene references the eighth labour of Heracles and reflects the strong civic association of Heraclea Pontica with its mythological founder. The Greek legend is disposed around the field, identifying the city and its colonial status. The composition is bold and energetic, consistent with the monumental civic bronzes struck at Heraclea during the Gordian period. |
