Sardis held the title of "twice neokoros" — twice temple warden of the imperial cult — a status fiercely competed for among cities of the Lydian conventus and formally ratified by the Roman senate. The magistrate named in this issue, Julius Soulpikios Hermophilos, is known from a small cluster of Sardian bronzes of the Gordian III period, suggesting a relatively brief tenure as archon. Provincial bronzes of this size from Sardis were struck for local prestige as much as commerce, and the neokorate title stamped into the legend was itself a political claim worth advertising on every coin.
