Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of the Emperor Valerian I facing right, presented in three-quarter rear view, with paludamentum fastened at the shoulder and segmented plate armour visible at the lower truncation. The imperial effigy is rendered in the provincial Greek idiom, with bold high-relief modelling characteristic of the Smyrna conventus workshops of the mid-third century AD. A circular Greek legend surrounds the bust within the coin's field, naming the emperor by his full Latin titulature transliterated into Greek characters.
