The syncretistic pairing of the local Lydian Zeus Larasios with the famous Ephesian Artemis reflects the religious identity and civic pride of Tralles within the Conventus of Ephesus. The multi-line Greek legend naming the grammateis runs around the reverse field. The scene is rendered in the detailed, if somewhat provincial, style characteristic of large-module Lydian bronzes of the Severan and post-Severan periods. |
